"Google bombs" are collective efforts to link to a site by a key phrase and artificially elevate a Web site in the Google search results for that search phrase. Google bombs rely heavily on the influence of PageRank. Some Google bombs are politically motivated, while others are done as pranks, and some may have been motivated by ego or self promotion.

Yeh, some lessons can be learned from this. Google seemed to rely solely on anchor texts to tell them what a page was related to. Because of the Google Bomb, they appeared to tweak their algorithms so that this anchor text now has to be confirmed by on screen words. So build many anchor text links, and be sure to confirm this on your page if you want to be ranked high for a particular term!

Also interestingly G. Bush's biography was anchored to 'miserable failure' by many. After Google tweaked their algorithms it disappeared from the search. When they amended the page and the word 'failure' was placed in the page, this confirmed the 'failure' part of 'miserable failure', and he ranked high for 'failure' even though he was anchor linked 'miserable failure'.

This tells us that Google will analyze separate words of multi word anchor text, rather than just reading them as a block. I never knew that! Therefore you should be able to anchor 'blue widgets' 'green widgets' red widgets etc... and this should help you rank for 'widgets' if the word widget is in the text. Although I have never observed this with my own sites. Any thoughts anyone?

That was the case of George W Bush. I think the term was "miserable failure" or something like this. There were other ones. I heard that Google tried to correct this because it led to less accurate results, but it still exists.

Google Bombing filter is one of the most dangerous filters Google ever invented - once you hit it it will take ages to get out of it...

As far as i know Google Bombing is not working anymore.
However Bing start showing it. Maybe they have to tweak their algo.

I agree with "cormack2009". Google bombing is not working. It worked in the past, like until 2007 maybe 2008 but now it doesn't work.
