I think it'd be great if a group of people came along who wanted to google bomb the term "google" to point to msn, yahoo or whatever else. A quick looks tells me such a project would require about 5 million or so backlinks. Wouldn't that be a riot? I don't run many sites but I'd be willing to do it. I could care less if google de-indexes me or not.
Don't know if this will work since very few people search for Google, more of a brand name that everybody knows
Hah the point would be just for fun more or less. It was an idea that just came to me. I wouldn't expect people to actually get behind it.
If successful this experiment will show that Google promotes democracy even against its interests, more links = more votes => msn gets the lead Should we expect a war led by google this time to promote occidental democracy somewhere?
I didn't think of it like that but it would be an interesting experiment to see if google would alter the results. However because of the high exposure such an experiment would have I think google would be on its best behavior.
google won't need any intervention to alter the results, this is mission impossible. Imagine all the links from .edu .gov all authority sites to google. Unless every single site in the net links to msn with that anchor, you won't beat google, hey remember it is an authority, at least for that special keyword
I don't think it's an impossible mission. Doing a google search for "site:.com" shows : 3,250,000,000 English pages for site:.com. (0.12 seconds) Doing a google search for "site:.net" shows : 192,000 English pages for site.net. ( !!!?? ) And finally Doing a google search for "site:.net" shows : 20,200,000 English pages for "porn" So by capturing a small % of the total web sites people could easily google bomb google or anyone else for that matter.
Doing so would piss Google off so much they'd start their "World Domination" campaign. And it would all be because of you! NO!
With Google being the market leader it's easier for us, we only have to optimize our websites for it ( and a bit for yahoo and msn ). but what if there were dozens of search engines, eacj with a few percents of the market and each with different algorithms ? I am fine with Google being leader
I doubt any serious Webmaster would actually want to run the risk of getting their site penalized just for a joke.
Exactly your talking about a billion dollar company here. If they want to strike back it will be ugly
Would google really bite the hand that feeds them by punishing web masters who included one link on all of their pages with the anchor text of 'google' but points to a non google url ? Have other people doing google bombs been punished? Google is a lot like the government - they need us more than we need them, and sometimes this point is lost. It is us that makes google great.
I doubt google would punish websites for linking to MSN with the anchor text Google. Besides, no one on Google searches for the term Google expecting to find Google. It's a catch-22, why would they be looking for Google on Google? Google couldn't care less how it was ranked for the term Google in their own search engine.
Google is in fact one of the most searched keywords. Use one of those services that show some search reports (like Wordtracker) and you will see that.
Most people search for different google services(maps, mail, blog search, etc), and not for google search
