Well, looks like Google is going into the telecoms. They have entered a bid to offer a free WiFi network in San Francisco.

    From Yahoo News:
Now if only Google can hurry up and finish their world dominination I'll be happy :)

That's exactly why they are doing it :) Crusader I'm waiting for the same thing... These guys are trying to get their hand in everything. Hopefully they don't difuse themselves too much or too quickly.

Free WiFi would be so cool. Maybe one day we will even get it here in Oregon :)

What about security? How are they protecting the users? I'm very leary of WiFi because of this.

When I first learn the internet at a young age (where talking 12-13). I was quite active in the warez scene. It didn't take long for me to get in some trouble (nice letter from the DMCA and RIAA). But the point is the way they traced me and many others was through the unique ip, if all of San Fransico is a "hotspot" how are they going to stop kids from downloading music etc.. I guess I don't completey understnad this free internet thing because knowing SF and the ACLU it would be against peoples privacy to have them login.

I agree Mizt. I don't trust big corporations that much and Google scares me to some extent. One thing I've learned is that nothing in this world is "free". If Google is setting up WIFI service that people can use freely, their has to be a string. I agree that it may very well be because they want to keep better track of surfers. I believe Google has their own reasons for doing this, and it may not work in the best interests of the users.
