After the criticism it faced for showing overlay ads, Google is now trying a web 1.0 measure and showing banner ads on its home page. Google has always refused to do so, but since acquiring YouTube, it has always searched for a way to maximise revenue from the video sharing site.
it always comes down to a question of money in the end, companies are only as ethical as the next dollar they can make.
If they had continued with overlay ads, youtube would become less popular. Could have led to the competition getting ahead.
they have a website which consumes a lot of bandwidth , so its there wish how they monetize it but it shouldn't turn off the end user
They have to monetize and no one in their right mind should expect otherwise. They'll play with methods until they get it right.
How are google adsense banners annoying or obtrusive, let me ask you a question e21media, how many of your sites use banner ads? Personally I use adsense on nearly all of my websites, and I can tell you now for nothing If I was running a website that cost millions per year to run I would damn right be trying to make some money back out of it all.
Why don't you think that how much they are investing for hosting all your videos and if they want to earn few bucks by placing banned ads than we should help them instead of criticism .
Hey Oli. I'm actually with you on this one. My post was not an objection to Google's move, but to highlight the challenge they faced like us all when it comes to monetisation, whilst at the same time trying to keep our members happy. I appreciate the way that Google tried to maintain a clean interface up until now, and have chosen to use good old banner ads as an interim measure. And yes, we use banner ads on all our sites. ;-) We need to eat right?
I don't see why they don't run video advertisements. It seems like the most logical way to monetize video content right? Doesn't have to be 30 second prerolls. 15 seconds is plenty. And they could stick on the end, or have it playing in the background while people select their next video. Its gotta be hard to monetize video with text advertising, or banners.
I'm NEVER watching a video that I have to sit through a 15 second ad to see. It's insulting. If I'm insulted enough by the same ad I avoid the product when I see it at the grocery store. Can't help it
I think this move is much better than monetizing the site with video ads. If they do serve video ads, audience will soon go to other competitor sites.
I couldn't agree more, the flak they'd get for forcing people to watch 15-second clips would be orders of magnitude greater than for using banner ads. Can always ad-block banner ads anyway
Well you can't blame them especially when they can't make the profit investing in YouTube. Anyway, they have the right to dictate the terms after all.
Perhaps ...but if the content creators are able to monetize their videos, then all the best content will wind up on youtube, and the audience may stick around.
