I believe it's Google's attempt to compete with Ebay / Craigslist type services.

I don't see why people think this is like ebay. It has nothing to do with auctions. It's more like craigslist, but really, it's not even just about selling goods or services. You can post anything you want. It's really a data mining application, or more specifically, data collection posted by actual human beings. The only thing left is some sort of interactivity or rating system.

It's like Ebay in the sense that you can post items to sell. I agree it has nothing to do with auctioning items....

And Craigslist isnt all about posting items to sell either (have you been to their site?)

To me, the new service takes "googling" to a whole new dimension. If they keep constantly revising it in response to user's feedback, Google with all its services can indeed become a one-stop shop for virtually all things anyone would do online.

Any idea why the code has to be inserted after the <META> before the </HEAD>?

I've got some sites where that would have to be manually added on each page, but if I have it at the bottom of the page just before </body> I can add it automatically

I think it has to be after the meta tags becasue it reads the meta tags.

I don't see a reason why you couldn't put it just before the </body>

Its a keywords world we live in. I can see what google are trying to do with base and i have to applaud them. Ive been following microsoft too on there next gen vista and its fileing-tagging system.

All the big players are trying to find the best solution to organisation of content. Unfortunately chaos currently rules but not if the likes of base and microsofts vista takes off.

Im personally using base to upload what content resides on my site. Im basically going thru my site and entering information that i have into base and linking it back to me.
eg. My site has information regarding fashion designers.
    1) i create a person record for each of my fashion designers
    2) i enter minimum information regarding what information my site has for this designer
    3) i enter my url link for this information
    4) i submit
    5) in a short while my content is searchable by google

Overall ive helped google tab and keyword my site. its a new form of crawling ones sites. Google arnt stupid, there crawler bots are very smart but the ultimate crawler is the actual site designer. As a webmaster and designer i think its great that i can tell google exactly what content is in my site versus having there crawlers take a algorithmic stab in the dark.

    This is cool.
I've submitted a link to my site to try it out.
Already i rank #1 for the keywords.
It will probably drop since there are only 66 results for it now but it's still cool :)
    Traffic also increased a bit.

Got product and you got distribution, it's the the bomb chronic.

(I'm way too white for these kind of statement's.)

Truth is, I'm seeing about 300 hit's off this, today, upload today.

Yep, I'm seeing some nice traffic from it. But it'll fall off overtime. I really don't see this sticking well with people on a large scale. I do, however, wonder what the criteria for having your base entries included in the SERPS.

I posted my ad for Big 12 tickets a few days ago now. Have gotten some decent clicks but no sales. The spam started pouring in this morning. For a while I was the only person with an ad for big 12 tickets. Now there are hundreds, and a lot of duplicates. Luckily I'm still #1, but anyone could see this one coming.

I think google is going o need to develop a way to eliminate the duplicates really fast or nothing is going to be worth looking at.

Since I put a direct url in the listing, it goes straight to the site when you click on the listing. I guess that to make a page on google, you need to leave the url blank, otherwise it just links straight to the page you specify.

    http://base.google.com/base/search?q=big+12&searchBase=Search+Base&hl=en
    Top listing.

I'd appreciate examples of RSS 2.0 files that have been used to upload content.
