Google Base Data Feed - How to Rank Higher ?

I have been doing my own 1500 product Google Base product feed for about 3years. I didnt used to have a problem getting ranked in the top several pages for any related key word search, but now Im getting buried by other big sites.

Ive asked for help from Google, and I keep getting the same reply to read the databse format instructions, which I have read 100 times.

Something the big sites are doing - that is trumping little ol me is what Im trying to figure out. Google does say the more headers you have, or fields, the better the ranking - but how far do I have to go ? Ive already got 12!

I think what used to help me the most is that there used to be a header field for key words, but that has been banished.

My question is - to anyone who thinks they know more about this than I do - how do I get my items to get better page rank ?

I can email anyone a copy of a data feed if you care to have a look.

We definitely need to bump this post up as Google Base is quite confusing, and offers little to no guidance on how it ranks the top sites. Anyone optimizing data feeds for ecommerce sites now? Any knowledge on how or why the Google Base rankings appear sometimes with 2 results, 3 results, or is non existent?
