Google backlinks was it my fault ?

I used to use my domain name without the www not for linking or anything just as a signature or forum post, as I started to promote my site again I use the www.

In Google webmaster Tools "Set preferred domain" I had Set URL www. as both with or without the www.

I have noticed my backlinks not showing up, over a few months its been stuck on 52 which didn't seem right, after all I have submitted my site to thousands of directories.

Today I "Set preferred domain" to "Don't set an association." was this my problem, time will tell I guess, just wondering if anyone here knows better ?

you can do it with or without www but use the same standard. if you use www and submit for backlinks using www, then your site will be indexed by google as www and you will find your backlinks using www. same concept if you are not using www.

and it terms of your backlinks not showing up, google doesn;t always show all the backlinks. do a search on yahoo for your backlinks (link:url.com) and see how many are there. if you see what you like to see, then you know the backlinks are there and its just google which doesn;t show all the links.

Google only showed about 40 of mine, Yahoo showed the first 1000, major difference; but since about 90% of search engine traffic comes from Yahoo, they're the ones that are important.

Ran into the same thing myself with www.fastercats.com and www.trading-signals.info. The best, most simple way of dealing with it is to pick a format and stick to it. Trying to use redirects from Apache control in cPanel, or something similar will work... sometimes.

    Cheers,

Well its probable related to the pr changes and not down to the Google webmaster Tools "Set preferred domain" settings, but I have gained 130backlinks in the last 24hours. Anybody else seen an increase ?

The google webmaster tool started displaying an increased backlinks for my site. It increased from 20 to 105. Generally google shows 1/10th or 1/20th of the total backlinks that is visible in yahoo. It is because of the google algo. So do not worry at all ;)
