Going for more direct competition with MSFT, Google appears ready to announce tomorrow, Monday 28-August, plans that it will offer software providing a range of online services for business users.

Vice president and general manager of Google’s enterprise business, David Girourad, called the move a “starting point” for Google in catering to business users.

Initially, the package will be free, but later this year Google plans to begin selling a version that includes additional features as well as technical support.

Mr. Girouard said he expected the pay service to appeal to larger organizations. He would not discuss any plans for pricing.

Google’s software offerings beyond search are focused on communications and enabling workers to collaborate, but the company is testing spreadsheet software and a word-processing program called Writely that will soon be offered over the Web.

Google plans to announce on Monday a beta version of Google Apps for Your Domain, which includes Gmail with 2 gigabytes of storage, Google Calendar, Google Talk and Page Creator.

The new service is an extension of Gmail for Your Domain, a service that Google launched in beta version in February. It allows organizations to use Gmail applications with their own e-mail address, instead of the "@gmail.com" domain.

The Gmail for Your Domain test service has tens of thousands of active domains, hundreds of thousands of users and hundreds of universities registered to use it, said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of Google's enterprise business.

The Google Apps for Your Domain service will allow organizations to outsource their communications applications to Google and to customize the user interface with their own branding and color scheme. Administrators will have access to an English-language Web-based control panel to do things like manage the user account list and set up aliases and distribution lists.

A premium edition with support and additional storage will be available by the end of the year for a fee, Girouard said. He declined to provide more details.

Yes, I agree with EVERYBODY, but G is just more successful in the search area and rest of their other G technologies are just followers, like G video, Froogle :D

Problem with google is they are data whores. They will own your data just like despite deleting an email, they can still access it internally.

People need to wake up. Before long, the AOL search results that were let out recently will seem like nothing after google uses it's data for whatever they think they need to save it for.

Just say no to using free data storage no matter who offers it. It's suicide. Use the example of how many people have been burned by their own blogs making private information available forever.

Storing data with google is a ticking time bomb!
