most people recommend 60 chars max. I see 66 in the serps quite often though. and you can always have a longer title that's cut off; it doesn't harm you.

Longer title cannot harm you but you should pay attention to the first 20 characters in your title i those 60-66 characters. Put most important keyword in this first 20 char. and repeat only once if you want.

Keep your title between 8-10 words. Any more and it's getting spammy, any less and it's wasted real estate.

Long title will dilute your the importance of your focused keyword, though no search engines care how long your title will be. However you shall go to the SERPs to see that each list only has a limited length of title, while longer title will be cut and maybe this will not give good impression of your website.

keep the keywords which are related to page content, in your title but don't make it longer(should be less than 60 char) otherwise a ..... will appear if you page is viewed in search results.

I would say the title should not be more than 60-65 characters. Anything more than would make it look spammy. Also important is the placement of keywords within the first few words.

people don't like to read long texts, their eyes goes first to the short titles.

Placing you targetted keywords first I believe will put more 'weight' on them in Google.

    Use title in this way:

Title of the page - Website name

    instead of

Website name - Title of the page

    This really helps!!!

I use short titles. Max 20-30 characters.

to thedark - seems to me you're right, but sometimes better to have a lot of information in your title.
