Does Google or any other search engine (like Y/AV) ever take penalize websites which spam the search results by employing doorway pages, keywords stuffing or cloaking? I do not think so. See this link and you will see for yourself: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=website+designers+india. And even sending feedback or complaining about spam has ZERO effect on the results. I complained to Google and Yahoo about this more than 3 months ago but no response.
They say they do, but I'm getting more and more Spam results in Google everyday. I don't know how they attempt to curtail it, but whatever they do currently is not "the answer" to stop Spammers. You do occasionally read about people that get banned though.
I believe they look at spam reports and classify them, as in - the reported site did it spam way # 347. Then they try (hopefully) to integrate a way to combat spam way #347 into their algo. The only time they 'ban sites' or take action towards specific agencies is if they are producting enough spam to generate enough complaints / enough embarrasment / enough junk pages. Enough is obviously an undefined threshold in each regard. The reason I assume this is that it is practical for them to do so, and responding to individual cases is not practical.
I read somewhere long ago that Google is developing some kind of an "automated" solution to curb spam but don't know if they've developed it yet or are even developing it for that matter. They should be more active.
Google takes a problematic approach to solving spamming - finding similarities among spam results and removing them this way, rather than a single spam result, which would take thousands of people doing it constantly.
The problem is one of defining Spam. Thousands of site owner believe that any page that is placed higher than their, is by definition, Spam. If Google ever attempted to follow up all these complaint they wouldn't have an automated search engine database. They would have a human edited collection of sites with all the same problems, delays and inconsistences of DMOZ. We covered this all in another thread the other day. The conclusion was don't waste your time complaining and writing Google. Just get off your ass and get your site placed higher in the SERPs. I've investigated some of the sites of some of the people complaining about being beaten by spammy sites. You wouldn't believe how bad some of their sites are. They clearly have no business being placed high in the SERPs, but instead of doing something construtive about their own sorry mess, they chose to try and get the other site banned by bitching to Google.
www.google.com/search?q=advertise+website+buy+sell&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&start=240&sa=N[/url] Spam, Google? Florida Update? or ADSENSE UPDATE? Look at the above search and click on the next 3 or 4 pages and tell me your opinion folks.
Who in the hell is going to go 240 places deep looking for stuff in Google? If they are trying to spam, they aren't doing a very good job, because that deep they are going to get zero traffic. Might as well be ranked #1000000...
I have a few sites which rank high, and above my cheating competition but why should I work my arse off day after day to get good serps when someone can put up a site and in a matter of no time can be ranking high in the serps by having a page full of hidden text and doorway pages. In the travel industry I am seeing a growing number of websites who are dealing in hidden text, doorway pages and it's alarming at the extent some of these people go to, one of the sites has over 2,000 pages and every single one has over 100 lines of hidden keywords! To me as an amateur SEO this is BASIC spam. Google needs to sort it's spam problem out otherwise its going to get over run with websites designed to spam google simply because they know there going to get away with it. Darren
I don't know Shawn, these same listings were very high up in many keyword combinations until the scam was exposed. Answer this, why did Yahoo ban these sites and Google left them in the search index?
I haven't seen much spam in the serps I am listed in. The one competitor who used doorway pages got banned months ago or are way down in the serps. So let your competitors do the really spammy stuff and eventually get banned - not what I am interested in doing........................
We have had this conversation already... Because Google doesn't bother with manual "banning" except for the absolute worse offenders (I know of maybe 3 sites ever). Instead they take a programatic approach and try to determine what is spam algorithmically and adjust relevancy (ranking) based on that. It doesn't make business sense to try and manually filter every possibly spam page. They would need 100,000 employees to do it, and even then that wouldn't be enough. Because of that, it takes longer for an individual site to be penalized for spam in Google, but in the long run, it makes the overall search results better (since they are able to apply the algorithms to the whole index).
Well WW, the true reason is not hidden text, fact is this is a traffic highjacking scheme, click on any of the links and see what happens, just like weeds pop up in your lawn, you will see ADSENSE on each of these thousands of sub domains pages. Secret, its in the ALGO.
I been have working my ass off to get my site ranked among the top 3 for my important keywords and I was pretty successful. But all of a sudden one fine day I see my site down to #10 becuase of many listings with keywords stuffed in their descriptions and titles and this really annoys me considering the fact how hard I worked to get good ranking for my site. It's not like someone is placed on top of my site that pisses me off but it sure is discouraging to see how easy it is to control the rankings. I do not plan to employ malpractices to get my rankings back but I do want them back. What should I do? Do you suggest I also walk down the path of keyword stuffing and hidden text?
The standard answer that most give to these things (so called spam) is that you are not doing a good enough job, so get more backlinks, its not Google's fault. Again, I think that Google results have been diluted so much since the "so called Florida update" that it simply forces webmasters to buy ADWORDS to stay in the Google game (ADWORDS/ADSENSE Game). It is not always spam, but a greater cross section of sites included to dilute the results that I have seen, in addition to redirection listings to affiliated Google advertising publishing partners. That is the truth, no conspiracy theory like some claim.
Anthony, I don't even understand your point. What are you possibly alluding to. This is the kind of vague -- hell, un-understandable -- statements that you make that gets you in trouble. If you have a point make it. But don't take us to some search in 240th place, and think that proved something, without even the need for an explanation. All I can tell you is that you had better get back on your medication. You just fell off the wagon as far as I'm concerned.
Fu** it... Go down the black <| route. why not. If you are promoting a site that is on topic, then why not spam? At the end of the day, you are giving the user what they are looking for, so just do it. If I see a directory spamming to get higher results, then I repport it. If I see a site offering "blue widgets" and they come #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7 #8 # 9# for the search term "blue widgets sales" then why not.
Well Bob can you explain why Google continues providing results after the first 50 if no one ever looks at anything after the first few pages? If they generate no click throughs why do they provide the results and place Google ADWORDS on these SERP's past the first couple pages? Hell if no one ever looks at them, they could save a lot of storage by just only providing the top 50 results for each search. Just think of the money Google could save. As far as my medication is concerned, I will go off and smoke something, but when I get back from getting high, will you finally get Google to remove these redirection of traffic results to ADSENSE (so called spam in the search index). In the mean time I will also take my anti-insanity pills, I think I skipped some in the last few days. Maybe I will Federal Express some to Larry and Sergey so they can become sane also.
