Google and link selling

I get a lot of offers to sell links on my blog. So far, I've resisted because of the fear of the google penalty.

I see a lot of people sell banner advertising on their site that links back to the advertisers page.

How is selling a banner ad any different from selling a link?

Good point. I guess you could say banner advertisers wouldn't be looking for "link juice".

As selling of links is consign, I dont think there is any different between textlink and banners selling. A lot of people are still selling textlink on there site with no problem.

Question: How is selling a banner ad any different from selling a link?
Answer: It should be the same unless there is a nofollow tag.

Agree with KurtF, if your selling text links using the "NoFollow" tag then you will be in the safe side ;)

There's a clear interpretation between those two. One is meant to pass on page rank and another is just advertising for sole purpose of getting traffic. Banner advertising usually uses java script and hence it won't be counted as a vote or anything. On the other hand, if you are selling links, make sure there is a nofollow tag that goes along with it or else it will be against google guidelines on passing PR juice.

As per google if others advertise on your site then you should use nofollow tag which dosen't pass link joice or Page rank.

You may sell a link on your blog or website. Just make sure you are selling links to other websites that are highly related to your website content wise.
Google will think you are just sending your visitors to more relevant pages, and they really like that.

Good point, waxman. That's why if you want to link your website to other, make sure that the site is related with your website's content/niche! You should remember not to link your site to any bad neighborhood or link farm, as Google will consider it as the intention to get some "link juice".

Good point waxman, though at times they still penalise people even if they sell links to related sites.

The funny thing here is that Google obviously doesnt like link sell and trade because they heavily rely their SERP on links. But who is Google to tell the entire population of webmasters what to monetize and not to monetize? If i were you i would make money selling links if its a good income to be acquired by doing so. If you keep your external links relevant it will be a win win anyways. Everyone is benefiting from it when the web being connected. ;P

You can too sell banners if you use no follow tags.

I do have been people who rank on top of google and they sell banners without using no follow tags. I have no idea how they can rank that high with good PR and they never get any penalty.
