Hey guys, OK, so if someone owns 2 sites of a similar but not identical nature and they are both owned under the same "Google Webmaster Tools" account. Verified etc. Is it OK to use articles off one site directly on the other? Even if they are owned by the same person? Or does the rules on duplicate content apply in this case too? Cheers for the help. RJP1
"Google Webmaster Tools" ? What / Who cares about the webmaster tools - what does the price of rice in China have to do with umbrellas in Argentina? Does the search/spider engine care that joe smith owns site A and B? No! duplicate content is duplicate content! simple as that.
Take an example from lyrics sites. They are not penalized for duplicate contents. It's just a matter of who's getting a better ranking.
The short answer is you will be penalised no matter if you own the sites or your content is duplicated on others sites. There has been a lot of testing going on recently by some of the bigger SEO companies and its looking as though the first copy of that content is ok but all subsequent copies are sent directly to the supplemental index.
in case of google webmaster you will not face any problem but in the case of content you will get problem.. so tc about the content rest of ok........
Google allow content to be up to 20% identical, that what they say in their guidlines so you can just rearrange paragraphs and change words and it wont detect it as duplicate content the problem is that no one knows how the algorithm works exactly.
If your sites are on the same IP and interlinked, one page with the duplicate content may not be recognized by google in their index (it depends also if you have only this content on the page or additionally substantial different content). As far as googles duplicate content penalization goes, search for "Fashion Trends for All Body Sizes" in google, out of the first 10 results, 5 articles are duplicate. Judging by these results, Google is actually SERIOUSLY IN NEED of a good duplicate content filter because why would I want same article presented to me multiple times?
avoid the duplicate content by posting your articles in a Blog. Link your sites to the Blog, and provide links to your sites in the article posts. I'm not saying this will work, I just thought I'd throw out the idea.
It also depends on your niche. The more popular your niche, the more duplicate content will be an issue.
Generally speaking, Google ignores duplicate content between sites. It just selects one to show in SERPs that it thinks is most appropriate. Duplicate content within a site is a problem and hence the need for rel=canonical. In your case it is between sites, it might be a different case as you own both sites and Google knows this as you have them both in Google Analytics. If I was you, I'd step quite cautiously.
You can be owner of 10 sites but all of them should have unique content, duplicate content & site ownership are not related. Every website has a different domain name meaning they have individual identity on the web, so they should also have their own content.
Only one of your sites with duplicate content will be able to get good rank in the SERP. Duplicate content is always bad idea.
