Google and Domain Age

It is a give that a domain with age is better than a brand new domain. What if that domain has never really had anything of substance on it and it isn't even indexed by Google. Say for instance the domain name www.diamond-blade.com. Would someone be better off buying this domain or starting out with a brand new one?

If you can find an existing domain with keywords on it or with a website with similar content, that would be the best.

Yea I think google has a thing in their algorithm that gives more 'points' to sites that have been registered longer. And they especially give more points to sites that have been in their index longer.

    For example something like-
    1 year old = +10 ranking points
    2 years old = +20 ranking points
    and so on

one more clarification. It's important this domain to be online and indexed in google.

Rgistered but not indexed 'is equal to' registered and indexed in google

I have new domain names that do just fine.....I get them indexed fast, get a good number of backlinks and organic traffic comes. I have bot old domain names before...it all depends on what the original domain name person did with them...for all you know they maybe banned :)

it's not just the age of the domain but also what 'authority' and 'trust' the domain has accumulated over the years

if you buy an old site that was used say to sell diamonds online and was ranking well for its keyword with decent pagerank etc and then convert that to a travel site, google will certainly know there has been a change in ownership and the content is different so the search engine certainly isn't going to rank that new site the same, nor will it necessarily have the same "trust" or 'authoirty" (I am deducing here) - there's been big changes in the text, link profile, content and internal linking structure etc etc which means google will re-evaluate the new site.

Correct. If you bought an old domain that never was a Web site then sincerely its age wouldnt matter. Again, if you buy an old domain that was a niche site on "tigers" for 4 years, rip its content off and make it a site on the famous golfer...the age of the domain wouldnt give you any benefit either...

Therefore, an old domain helps (particularly) if the domain was a Web site and you buy the domain (site) and add unique content to it on the same/related subject.

As far as brand name goes, personally I like working on names that are perceived as "unbrandable" ...If you've a sound product and if you're proactive, any name could be brandable! :)

The theory that aged domains are "more important" is because with a typically aged site they tend to have more power, trust, aged links etc...

Butjust having a aged domain wont do you any good... if their isn't any authority... new sites can easily outrank older sites as well... it boils down to authority and the signals that bring the authority

    Yes,
Older domains are trusted domains and google give more weightage to them. Because a lot of new domains are spam

I have one 10 year old domain, it ranks very good at competitive keywords. The older the domain is the better it ranks.

Google likes good quality websites and domain age is one of the best factor to make your website more reliable. If you have 5 to 10 year old website then this factor will make your website more reliable for search engine and you will get benefit to get top ranking for particular keywords.

You can buy domains that have age but have accumulated a bad ranking with google. Age is only a small factor, the past rankings, age of incoming links and established content are often misinterpreted when it comes to SERPs. Many believe that the benefits received from these factors are due to domain age. This is not correct and age only gives a very small effect.

I would recommend buying an old domain if you know its history well. You can make big mistakes when buying an old domain that google has recorded as a 'bad' site in the past.

Do what you think is best in the situation but if you want to play it safe then a new domain may be best.

Domain age is very important factor for Google. Additionaly we can get more links for old domain (ban and filter aren't a big risk).
