So what you are saying is that there are black holes in DMOZ where you submit sites and no matter how good, you have ZERO chance of being listed. That is wonderful. Heaven forbid that there is a "Editor Wanted" or "Don't bother submitting here we have no editor" notification. Lets just say that a listing has as much value as everyone says, except for those sections of subject matter where there is no one to edit the section? What a broken model! I bet there are 10 sections I would be great to edit, if only I knew where help was needed.
Yes you are right it said they had enough editors or the section was too broad for a beginning editor. I understand the logic, but the opposing logic is that is the section has 200 entries and no editor and nothing has been added for months, maybe you shouldnt be turning people down. But that is just me. So tonight I just applied for a smaller subsection. Lets see how that goes.
It takes a while for an editor to know what they're doing (snooks'll tell you ) and the category size limit is there for two reasons. 1. It's not too daunting for a beginner 2. It's a damage limitation thing - needed because beginners make mistakes that somebody'll have to fix. I see that your latest application (for the same too large category!) was also declined. Before trying again, I urge you to study this advice.
Well yes my application was declined in 90 minutes flat, but not for the category being too large, this time for completely different (form letter) reasons. That's fine, I am done with ODP. Best of luck to them.
Was that a criticism or a compliment on our fast response? One or more of the form letter reasons will apply to your application. Different metas will look at various aspects of an application in a different order.
Yes I am sure one or more of the 7 reasons in the form letter applies, which I don't know, Which I don't care. If they could respond to directory inclusion responses as fast as they respond to editor requests it may be worthwhile. Well let me clarify that if they responded at all to directory inclusion requests that would be a positive step. I'd rather be told NO and why then wonder whether anyone has even seen my request.
We all realise how important it is to accept more volunteers who will help to build and improve the directory, so careful and prompt review of editor applications is a very important role for meta-editors and catmods. On the other hand, reviewing suggested sites is not a priority for any editor, because there are so many other places where good sites can be found.
Sounds good, then shut off the suggestion links and go find all the good sites yourself. Sounds like a great idea! Perhaps you have a few hundred editors and 55 million websites to evaluate..... READY GO!
Thats a damn good idea Joeventura and one that I and many other editors would support Turning off the submissions would be great, would cease all the animosity and cure a lot of problems. You see, we dont need suggestions, we dont have a time frame for building the directory. We do it when we want, as long as we want and as many sites as we want. Like i said the suggestion pool is only one spot that we look for sites, but as you have seen, it does cause a fair amount of angst. It is webmasters pushing the time issue, it is webmasters pushing the "Got to be included" mentality....we are simply one of hundreds of like minded bunch of people, enjoying the hobby. Two of our senior editors have tried very nicely to guide you into applying again, they encouraged you to read the guidelines very closely and could not do much more for you, other than hold your hand. They obviously saw potential in your editing skills and the editor application is a task in itself.....I failed numerous times. I did however finally succeed and im now very happy. Being part of the team is great, a few more editors would be even better. Just my thoughts. Cheers.
I'll use your quote here the next time someone points a finger at me for listing my own site. Heh... because yes, I agree with you. There is a LOAD of information for a new editor to read through, and sadly when I was a new editor MOST of that information for me to read was still dead due to the big Crash. No, it looks like Digital Point is still important... DP just happens to talk about the ODP.
LOL. I understand why it will be a very very good idea for some editors, you can even say even more beneficial.
Like asking if there are hookers in a brothel. [A bit creatively cramped right now, couldn't think of a more pleasant simile ]
Don't you think it should be a priority since you say that you will do it: An ODP editor will review your submission to determine whether to include it in the directory. Depending on factors such as the volume of submissions to the particular category, it may take several weeks or more before your submission is reviewed. I suggest a new quote for the site: An ODP editor may review your submission to determine whether to include it in the directory or not. Depending on factors such as we don't feel like looking a suggested sites, the volume of submissions to the particular category, it may take several weeks or never before your submission is reviewed. Let's get that changed right away!
So, what you are saying is that no editor ever once (not even a single time) deleted a list because they simply didn't want to look at it any more? Sorry, but WILL is NOT the perfect word for that part... especially when there are enough editors saying they don't bother or at least don't need to bother. If that is your version of perfection, then it's no wonder you post Anonymously
I have tried many times to get in the dmoz but always failed. I have tried different categories but still no joy. Andrew
Did you decide that the submission guidelines (which youve acknowledged you've read and agreed 'many times') didn't apply to you? They require that a website be suggested once to the one best category. It's OK to suggest a website to a Topical category (if it has topical significance) and a locality category (if it has local significance). Note that further suggestions to the same category merely overwrite any older one there, possibly shooting yourself in the foot. Further suggestions to other categories are against our ToC, cause extra work for you and extra work for us, thus selfishly contributing to a process slow down for everybody. There's also a danger of being deemed a spammer and treated accordingly.
