Hello Everyone, I have several sites in which I have been monitoring how many links Google says are attached to them (ex. links: www.url.com). I have seen this fluctuate some. However, I recently saw a sharp decline from 54 links down to 38 on one site. My question is whether this is common and what might have caused this decline? I could understand that maybe a few might drop out b/c sites may no longer exist or drop in credibility or ranking; however, why would there be this large a drop, especially if I am making efforts to build in additional links each week? Any help you could give regarding this issue would be appreciated? Best, JDSalinger
my "external Links" has gone to zero in webmaster tools... it still hasn't come back. It is a fairly new site, however at one time it did show links. I still show in some search results.... We will have to see. ty
I guess it depends on the source of the links I have used my signature links here at dp forums to build some deep links for my sub pages and I've noticed that my signature links has been significantly reduced, a few months ago I had over 3,000 links for a few of my subpages now those pages have less than 100 links. I think if you get too many backlinks from the same domain google will only count a small percentage of those links.
PR is closely tied to the number of links to your site. google has lots of algos to detect trickery and faking/spamming.
I would suggest to to focus on getting more backlinks than wasting time watching link fluctuations Did you see changes in Google Webmaster Tools?
Google like fresh data whether it is content or links. Stale links are not shown in google for longer time. Hence, link building process has to be continuous.
The link function in google is more for publicity purposes. It usually shows the really good links you have to your site, but it won't display all of them because it would be too great a task. In relaity you will have more than google says. What is more important is your SERPS ranking and this will increase as you post more backlinks via forums like this one
I agree in that it has to be continuous. It might not be so extreme as with paid search, where the minute you stop paying you dissapear, but it does fade away wit time.
I agree that link building is a part of any webmasters long term tasks. I had over 10K of my links "disappear" over a period of 6-8 months of not pursuing links. These were many low quality directory links on yahoo...... I finally weaned myself from constantly looking at the score - seeing how many links I had - as I am concentrating on a link building strategy. In my area there is a feverish link building frenzy as it is competitive and I don't see a day where I don't try to add links in the near term, for sure.
All my links have disappeared....webmaster tools shows that 3 of my sites have zero links.....will all the 3 sites lose their PR in the next update?
