    Hello,

I have decided to run a little experiment with a dedicated IP. I have heard a lot of times people debating over dedicated IP good or not for SEO. So why not test myself. I am testing on my new site the effect of dedicated IP. I am also testing other factors which may contribute to better ranking. Will keep you folks updated of my findings!!!

Ya I am hosted with hostgator.com

Sure. I have had problems with my mails considered as spam from some service providers cause of the shared IP.

The opinions are mixed. Matt cutts has cleared that up because he said that if the hosting company performs virtual hosting correctly then no problem of sharing Ip's.

    My guesses

    Why shared Ip is good

    1. No extra cost
    2. Search engines consider sites hosted on sames sites differently
    3. No Ip propagation time

    Why dedicated Ip is good

    1. Sign for search engines that this site is serious about establishing themselves online
    2. We can access our site via IP
    3. No problems of spam filters taking down our emails unless we ourselves spam
    4. pretty much cheap to have at around 2$ a month

Whether you use a dedicated IP or shared IP has no effect on your rankings. Dedicated IPs do have one advantage over shared. I just answered a similar question earlier today with the following response:

This "peace of mind" that you will not be accidently penalized if Google hands out a penalty to an entire IP is the only "real" advantage to dedicated IP.

How do you run a site without a dedicated ip? That is what I would like to know. Think about this just for a minute, do you "really" think that yahoo, msn, cnn, or any of the other news sites change their IP?

And, everytime you change your ip, your site will appear to be down for up to 48 hours. No site admin in their right mind will change their ip address unless they HAVE to.

I do not know how anyone can justify "not" having a server with a dedicated ip address. My sites can not not have down time everytime the site change its address.

Even with shared IPs you have a fixed IP address. It doesn't change. It's just that 50 other websites on that same web server have the same IP address as you. With a dedicated IP, your web on that server is assigned its very own IP address instead of your web having the same IP address associated with it as the 49 other sites on that same server.

Dedicated vs. shared IP has really nothing to do with your site being up or down. The uptime/downtime is the same regardless of whether you have a dedicated or shared IP. It's when the server itself is up or down.

Now a dedicated server will get you a dedicated IP AND you're the only web on that box (or virtual box if its a Virtual Private Server).

Any site will have IP. Say A.B.C.D is the IP. It may be able to host around 2^16 hosts using this IP alone. Some may be able to host 2^22 and 2^8 hosts depending on C class Ip or B class IP or D class Ip or A class IP.

Even on a single IP it is possible to virtually configure different hosts. This is what is done in shared hosting. If you reverse look your IP you can see which all sites are hosted on your same IP.
No. its just enough to configure your IP one time. After that there is realy no need to do that again.

This is the IP propagation delay

First of All, Search Engines don't rank websites on basis of IP whether shared or dedicated!

    But, if it is a plus point to have a dedicated IP because;
1> If you are on a shared server and your neighbourhood websites on same server / ip are spamming or using blackhat techniques, you may get a little penalty.

Now that is not entirely true.

Many would say that if there are sites google doesn't like which are hosted on that same ip (whether by you or another person with your hosting company), than google might penalize your site..

IMO, dedicated or non-dedicated doesn't matter.

Think about it...millions of sites use shared IP addresses, Google obviously knows this so even if there is a spammer domain on a shared IP, they wouldn't penalize all other sites on the domain. Else, if your competitor site uses a shared IP, all you would have to do is get another domain on the shared IP and start spamming people.

What if The DNS goes wrong. I know for SEO it does not matter a lot. But we cannot be sure. There may be a small weightage.

How do you expect to get on that exact shared server that your competitor has?? And google isn't as merciful as you think.

I was just about to start a similar thread when I found this one...

Can somebody explain me, is there any change in the rankings or maybe down-time of the site(that will be too bad) if you move to a dedicated IP an already established site - 3+ years old, great rankings?

There are no "bad neighbours" on my sites' IP's, and I never inter-link them, but still I think a dedicated 1 will be better...

    Thanks in advance!
