Does google and other search engines rank you on your bouncerates?

Just curious cause 1 friend says they do, while another says they dont.

In the google analytics program and a couple others. They show a bouncerate. Im just asking if your bouncerate is high, if it could damage your ranking in search engines.

No. Your bounce rate doesn't do anything with search engine rank.
    Backlinks helps search engine rank.

    What Google says:
“Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits (i.e. visits in which the person left your site from the entrance page). Bounce rate is a measure of visit quality and a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance (landing) pages aren’t relevant to your visitors.”

So they are saying that a high bounce rate is an indication that your page is not relative to the search. Since being relative to the search is an important factor for a Search Engine is just seems logical that this would play some part in the overall algorithms that decide your placements.
Either way you want to lower your bounce rate if possible. A lower bounce rate means an increase in conversions.
The longer someone stays on your site the more chance you have of selling them something.

    my 2 cents

I think no, the bounce rate high dont really mean that the website is not good.
If the bounce rate high but the average time is long, mean the result is accurate, the visitor get the information s/he looking on the enter page

I think they WOULD use it..it makes sense to place the best performing, with regards to the bounce rate, sites near the top of the search index. Why? Because it means people like that site. Gone would be the days where a spam site would sit right above you in the serps!

However, it would be difficult for google to find out, for EVERY site, the bounce rate. Why? Simply because not everyone uses analytics. It would be UNFAIR of google to rank me based on my bounce rate, but then place a spammy site above mine, because google doesn't have that information and thus can't slap them for it!

Any such ranking decision cant be made on bounce rate alone, several others factors come into play. Because if you buy PTC traffic (not PPC traffic) then bounce rate will become less and less.

Sometimes google is quite unreasonable for a particular web site. You may have the best original content, but due to poorly done site navigation google may end up allocating a lower page rank, even though your site will be on the 1 page.

It is a very good question that the OP made. One that we will never get a straight answer for.

These guys (Google) are no dummies and know the SE world better than anyone else. I am sure they have considered anything we have brought up.

I do know I have never ever heard of Google being fair to anyone. You have the money? Then they'll give you fair.
If not, then you get what you get and they will not hear you regarding anything. Not even if a Baby Diapers site is out ranking your MP3 site searching MP3.

Perhaps we should all chip in and bribe a Google Engineer for the algos. ;)

This arguement has been going on forever.
It would be a smart idea for google to trace bounce rate but I don't think they do. Imagine you're looking for a five day weather forecast in London. You go to the first website and get all the information you need on the landing page. Thus you stayed only for a few seconds and only on one page. Does it mean that your website is irrelevant? NO, it's the other way around, as you got all the information you needed. Thus bounce rate in itself is quite useless.
On the other hand, I pretty certain Google monitor your behaviour. For example, if you go to the first website and get all the information it's fine, but if you go to the first website and then go back to the search engine and click other websites it means that you didn't find the information you were looking for on the first website thus it must be somewhat irrelevant. And google react to this information not bounce rate.
