Google and back links

I noticed that in many cases Google doesn't recognize back links on other sites. If you search for :

    link:http://www.yoursite.com

on Google, in most cases it'll not list all the sites with your link on them. Yahoo finds back links better but Google - most important SE doesn't work the best.
So I wanted to ask is there any way of improving this - can link on the another site be put the way that Google will find it more likely ?

I'm really interested in this problem because in my expirience Google finds maybe 1/3 of back links - that means more than 60% of work is not recognized.

What Google shows for backlinks is not all that it recognizes. You will find sometimes if you do the search you will get same number but diffrent results for the actual links. I am sure there are a few other threads about his in this section of the forum.

And yes Yahoo is more acurate for showing total number of links, but just know what you see in Google is only a small percentage of what you actually have.

My boss explained it to me this way: Google has statistics it takes from other pages and recognizes that established sites only gain so many links in a set amount of time. Its an average. Therefore it will look at your site and only take that many at a time. Therefore after awhile it will eventually recognize more and more. Google is best used for an approximation, whereas Yahoo or MSN will give you a more accurate number.

There has also been talk about a Google link filter that keeps new links from benefitting you until 2-3 months down the road.

I concur. Google places your website in the sandbox and then sandbags your links ... grab a bucket and build a castle while you're waiting to play :)

I might buy that if I had not seen an old established site drop from over 200 backlins a year and a half ago until 64 now. From one backlink update to another I may go up, I may go down.
