Its not hard to find out at all Query Google for "allinurl:/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic" (example), this will return about 127,000 results; you just need to know the directory names/filenames and if robots.txt doesn't block access to plugins folder, Google can easily see these auto posting plugins. However, there are other methods to check also, this was an easy example.
It is true if you don't know how to set up safely. I do install autoblogs, i have some running myself and they all rank well and get backlinks even if i don't do any work at all on them, wich is what is happening to some of my sites, no time to work on them. And i keep AdSense withouth any problem at all. Not always is trash trust me
here's a link on the death of the autoblog www.ranksurge.com/death-of-the-autoblog.htm meh, take it for what it's worth.
article directories are kind of like auto blogs. they don't produce any good content. take ezinearticles for example. most of their articles are like 300 words long, and those articles suck crap. Google probably has an insider deal with ezinearticles
autoblogs are not dead! Are dead if you don't make a buck from them! LOL I run many of them and i definetely don't think they are dead...
Google has been bringing the hammer down on autoblogs recently. Just browse around various IM forums and you'll notice this.
Google makes money by adsense and all the people even the average internet users know this reality. Over time, more and more people think that there is a quite relation with adsense ads and google search results. Now they called these thoughts as "misconception" on their blog post and they try to keep their brand by fighting with autoblogs. In my opinion, there is no content originality problem for anyone including the end users, webmasters, google search, adsense and advertisers. The real problem is that people hate to see ads. I think that google tries to hide this reality by announcing their new rules to improve their "search quality". They can delete all of the copied contents from their caches if they think this can help themselves. They just need to find an alternative method to adsense to make money but they couldn't find yet.
The point is that not all the autoblogs work the same way. Google can do whatever they want, deleting blogs with duplicate content and it's ok. But if you are able to make the content to "look unique" then you are done, away from risks. Simple as that.
I used wpdirect(popularly known as wordpress direct), and found that didn't work properly for me as expected.
Article sites are far from being a content farm. Google surely knows who to punish as they are aware of which is which are the autoblogs.
There is not and there cannot be any substitute to manually doing the thing. Auto blogging is definitely not a very good idea- and why should google support it ?
