Google and a new domain

    I purchased a domain about 4 months ago for a new site I am planning to build. When I purchased it, I registered it with Google and published it, to begin the clock with Google.

    The site will be competing in a very competitive area for keywords. Should I scrap my current domain, and go purchase a domain that has been published for awhile? I realize I need to optimize the site, and gain back links, but what are peoples thoughts regarding purchasing a domain that has been published for a few years, versus my freshly published domain? Any thoughts?

    Are you only talking about domain age in this case? Domain age is much less important then content, backlinks etc.

    Domain age does not matter MUCH. What matters is quality of your content and quantity + quality of backlinks. That's the only basic recipe of ruling SERPs these a days.

    Domain age does matter although you would say it does not matter much.

    What I mean is that it is still a variable in any SE algorithm to rank you well and to be pegged as an authority site. :)

    This is just my personal opinion.

    I honestly believe domain age doesn't impact Google's PR much.

    You can have an old domain with no backlinks compared to a new domain with a lot of backlinks and the newer one will win for that competing keyword.

    Domain age is more relevant to things like alexa ratings etc, to get your pr up and be listed for keywords, it will make no difference or very little really. You will have all the hard work whatever the age of the domain.

    I greatly agree this. Only the important domain that own their rank in google can improve your rank, buy these domain are very expensive.

    If you have money, go for the domain which is aged. 3-5 years and age is dominant factor in SEO.

    I would look at a wider range of factors, a newer domain that is keyword rich will help you so much in a year or so, the old domain and its pages could be 301nd to the new domain and search positions could well remain stable even though the domain is new.

    Buying an old domain could be helpful if there is a really good history and I have bought some in the past that had a good set of inbound links as well as lisitings in directories such as Dmoz. If the old domain is keyword rich then the links will be from relevant sites too.

    Its all about homework and you need to analyse any exisiting domain before you buy.

    A new keyword rich one can be managed to offer the best possible opportunity for the short term and a much stronger competitive edge in the long term.
