I don't understand this... I have the number one and number two spot for a keyword that, according to wordtracker, gets over 500 searches a day. Yet Google Analytics says I'm getting around 1 visit per day. Does this make sense? Is there something I'm not factoring in?
hst151975, the free version of Wordtracker typically uses a global sample. So 500 searches a day may from countries other than your own. To get an exact figure of the traffic the search term buys go to Google Adwords. By the term using exact match .i.e. [your term] and run a report showing your impressions share. From recent experience even terms ranked no.1 in the organic results pick up less than half the impressions generated.
You could just look at your server logs to see how many actual referrals you got for the specific keyword. With Analytics, I have discovered that it counts all visits as having come from the same source, even if the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc time they visited was a direct visit. For example, suppose someone searched for the word "keyword" and ended up at your site, and immediately added it to their favorites. Later in the day they visit your site 3 more times by using their favorites menu. In reality, you only got one referral for the search term "keyword", and three direct visits. In Analytics, this will show up as four referrals for the search term "keyword", and zero direct visits. I'm not sure if Analytics credits the initial referring source for all future visits or just future visits on the same day.
