I'm using both Google Analytics and Awstats and recently noticed that they don't show the same stats ex: UV. Google Analytics is a lot lower than what Awstats is reporting what's the reason for the such a huge discrepency?

What do you prefer Google Analytics or Awstats?

Awstats is not very accurate at all. Stick with Google Analytics

Google Analytics requires JavaScript in order to record a visit (98% of users had JavaScript enabled in 2010, probably higher today). On the other hand, Awstats will parse your server's log file, so it catches all browser requests of any kind (including web crawlers and bots). Although Awstats does an okay job at filtering out bots, crawlers, and duplicate entries, it still counts a bunch of them. And while some bots/crawlers do run JavaScript these days, Google Analytics is much better at identifying them.

I suspect you'll get better accuracy from Google Analytics, especially if your demographic is not a fringe set of users who use NoScript and other tracking-disabling extensions.

Google Analytics is the best. Wouldn't recommend anything else that is free.
