Google Analytics Hit Limit

I'm currently using Google Analytics and was wondering about the hit limit on the free version of GA. I've been trying to suss out what happens when the limit is exceeded but I've failed to find any solid answer to this question, i.e. is it a strict cut-off at 10 million hits during the course of a month, is any data in excess of 10 million hits simply ignored by GA, do the excess hits still register but GA then applies sampling as it would do for segmented custom reports, is there any kind of alert mechanism to warn when the limit has been reached?

Does anybody have any experience of hitting this limit and know what the impact of it is, and is it worth upgrading to GA Premium in anticipation of this happening or is it worth pushing the envelope first?

    Thanks.

Haven't ever heard of limits of any such kind. Hits will be counted as long as they keep coming.

Thanks for responding. The limit I'm referring to is the one described here in Google Analytics Help:
