Google Analytics - Good or Bad for SEO

Discussion in 'Google' started by Ayrzee, Dec 2, 2008.

    Hi,

I'm feeling slightly paranoid about using Google analytics.

I'm aware that bounce rate and a few other factors, all available through analytics, are also relevant to SEO.

The question is: would this information be available to Google if I didn't add their analytics script to my source code?

    Thoughts please.

Of course... the more interaction you have with Google through their "free" products and services, the more granular information they will aggregate about you (your sites, your email, your monetization, etc.) ...

If you don't use Google Analytics (nor Google Adsense) that will obviously limit the amount of detailled information they will have about your site... but keep in mind they get it from many other sources as well ; the Googlebot crawler, people who visit your sites using the Google Toolbar, to name but a few.

I think that Google Analytics is fine and has a rich feature set and user interface, but the biggest gripe is it is (intentionally?) lacking certain metrics such as SE bots that visit, and most importantly: stats are always several hours behind.

    All IMHO, of course...

We all know that google has good tool for SEO. And analytics is just one of the best tool that every webmaster used to track traffic. It doesn't matter if they know the data since they're the big boss. Every tool that we will use as web tracker can have our data. But I think we are more secure in google analytics than other tool.

I dont see what is so terribly wrong about google collecting all the info they can. I see no reason not to use a great free tool.

i think the question you are asking is if Google would use that data as a signal for organic rankings. It's been theorized that they do, but I believe it to be on a very BROAD scale.

As you mention, not every site has Analytics, so it would be unfair to penalize you based on bounce rate and rank a site better that did not have Analytics installed.

You also should consider that bounce rate means that it was just a one page visit. Certain types of sites are going to have a higher bounce rate compared to others naturally. For example, a blog that puts the entire post on the main page is going to have a higher bounce rate because the user is able to read all the information on the first page it visits. It does not always mean the user did not like the site.

Matt Cutts did say that people using Black Hat seo strategies should not use Analytics. I interpreted this to mean that if your site was being investigated by an employee at Google, they would be able to look at Analytics data to prove or disprove what you were doing and then take appropriate action.

    it works both ways :)

when google has more information about you then it will help your SERP
if you have information provided by google you can see what you need to improve :)

thats just my opinion or common sense :)

You give Google some extra information when you use analytics, but IMO it will not affect your rankings, at least not enough to not use what is a great tool.

Slept on it; I'm feeling less paranoid this morning! Thanks for your thoughts.

I think DavidK1's got it spot on. I'm sure that Google will aggregate this data into the mix to some degree. In truth, I think Google's analytics should be used with caution, depending upon the type of site your working with.

What a load of crap. I have many blogs with very high bounce rates. Why wouldn't they? People land on long tail search phrases...find exactly what they need....and leave.

Most people aren't going to "join" or "explore" your website when they find the exact term they were looking for.

Big G would anyhow get hold of your site's data from various other sources...hence do not let that deter you from using this wonderful free tool.
