I'd guess that an avg. bounce rate for a gaming or video site would be 40% or lower, and around 65% or higher for a corporate/business site.

My bounce rate is just under 45%

But I think there is more to this than meets the eye.

Let's say people find your site in google and was taken to your site and your site is monetized by adsense, then there is a chance that the exit has been on the adsense adverts- they have come to your site and the adsense ads are that well placed that it gives you an high bounce rate.

    Does this sound feasible?

I've got a blog with a 30-40% bounce rate, and a programming site with a 70-80% bounce rate...

Makes sense, people like to click around when reading blogs, whereas they find the code site through google, copy the code and exit the page...

Other than what was mentioned above, I think one of the best ways to lower your bounce rate is to do a lot of internal linking on your blog. I had a bounce rate of 65% last month until I started linking to my blog in almost every post. Now its at 35%. If you put a plug in with "related entries" or "recent articles" under your post I think that can also help.

Google certainly used bounce rates as a factor in PPC rankings. One would think it safe to assume they would apply the same logic to organic listings.

After all, a high bounce rate says to Google that, yes, your site is good at attracting people, but bad at satisfying their needs (i.e., it could be seen as a bait-and-switch).

However, a splash page with only a "click here" showing will have a very low bounce rate as people are taking action.

So perhaps Google does not factor bounce rates into rankings as splash pages with "click here" on them are an all-too-easy way to game the system.

    Any thoughts on this...?

I would add that it greatly depends on how well is optimized the content of the landing page. If you are offering a very specific and well detailed page, like a contact page, or the direct sales telephone page, users may come just to get the telephone number, and the conversion rate can be very high with a high bounce rate.

I read in other this forums that the ideal bounce rate is at 25 to 30%. If its up 30% its still fine but when it reaches over 40% theres a problem to your site. users close your site fast and don't even bother to stay long, maybe because they don't like how it looks or they didn't find what they want.

That's plausible if those visitors landing on a given page are clicking on the ads.

A high bounce rate is definitely not a good thing. But it can help you optimize your site accordingly.
The basic points for bounce rate reduction are:
    Lower your page load times
Measure the bounce rate of your individual traffic sources
    Have Clear Navigation
    Tamplets with fresh navigation
    Setting Internal Benchmarks Is Important
Motivate the user to click deeper into your site

for me 50% bounce rate is acceptable for Google Analytics. and if you reach higher than that you need to improve the website and the ways of promoting your website

My biggest site is around 30% and I have over 500k uniques per month. It's a forum that requires membership to view threads. I'm happy with 30%.

the bounce rate good or bad depends on the how targeted the keywords that were used to enter into the page. So a targeted visit to a casters page using keyword casters, if the web user bounces out of that page that could be a good bounce since they go the contact information they needed or product info. A bad bounce is if a different term was used to get to a certain page. Also broader terms lead to bad bounces.

Another factor in bounce rate is the landing page design if the navigation is bad or of low quality the user may be forced to bounce out of the same page. This is a bad bounce.

Splash pages can contribute to high bounce rates.

Bounce is the total no. of visits consisting one page view divided by total no. of visits.

bounce means a person view one page of a site & go away from that site to another site.
high bounce rate is not good for a site.it meanly should be 35% t0 50% for good site.
