google analytics - bounce rate question

    Hi
the analytic for my website display almost 40% bounce rate for the organic google traffic.
the strange thing is that it also shows that the bouncers stayed 00:00 sec on the site.
does this mean they closed the site and not clicked anything on it, leaving no way for google to know how long they've been on the site, or something different?

    B

The bounce rate is people who visit your site and then exit straight away without clicking further on your website links. Presumably they came to your site and your site didnt provide them with the information they where looking for.

GA can't tell how long they're on the site if they don't go to more than one page. The duration of stay is measured as the time of the last page load minus the first page load

I think that when it's shown 00:00, it means that they've actually spent some time reading the page, then closed the browser, since Google can't possibly track how long they've been on the page.
BTW, I think that everything under 40% is quite good...

a bounce occurs when a visitor comes to your site (landing page) and exits your site from the landing site itself with out going deep/further.this can happen if your site has only one page or uninteresting topic.
so answer to your question is,yes they leave with out clicking any links. and i dont know what happened to your time...!!!

    thank you all for replying.
    r3born: I actually think 40% is quite high (it's 37% now :p) for a niche E commerce site.
    I guess I'm aiming more to 20%.

I have loads of text, so loads of visitors come via weird keywords :) That's why my bounce rate is not that low (43%). If you manage to get your 20%, you're a lucky man :) I'd say the average is 50-55%. Please correct me if I'm wrong..

My Bounce rate is currently at 22.46% with an average of 10.95 pages per visit from 355,666 visits in the last month.

I Thought 22.46% was quite high, but now from what people have said it sounds pretty good.

When looking at the bounce rate for certain keywords, I notice my website name has a bounce rate of 10.38%, thought this would have been lower as they are actually searching for my site by its name!

How about if they come to your website and they immediately leave on an Adsense ad? Are those people included in the bounce rate?

    Man, it's really good...
I get around 30% bounce rate for my site name, I hope this is because the site name is a bit generic, it's not a real brand :)

Don't get overly obsessed with bounce rates, they fluctuate
