I just noticed that my 'direct' referals have jumped form low single digits to over 30% (38% today). Is 'direct' only visits where the user typed in the URL or could it be a link from an email or some other not so traceable referer?

Direct is where the user went directly to your page. As in they typed the address or they clicked a book mark.

I wasn't aware of the filtering, I will check it out.

The numbers seem high as I don't type in my own domain name much. May be I have some minor success in branding.
