I'd like to monitor my competitors using Google Alerts. I've set a couple up such as

    "first_name last_name"
    link:domain.com

Is there any others to get a better picture of where all their links are coming from.

I use Google Alerts to monitor my competitors and keywords.
Keywords let me see what's going on in the industry and when I see an alert about my competitors I visit the sites and try to submit my website there. For my competitors I only use URL.

Google alerts is a useful tool but sometimes it's same to be witha little time deviation..You can see your competitors' backlinks at Backlinkwatch.com or use seo spyglasses to have an analysis.

It's better you manually do it.
But, there are several tools available like IBP which can make your job easy by automated quarries to search engines.
