Google Alerts for monitoring backlinks?

    Hey guys,

I've seen various blog posts on seo blogs that say you can monitor your backlink growth using Google Alerts. They seem to suggest submitting a query like this:

    link:domain.com
    Code (markup):
And I was thinking... will this be actually useful at all? I mean, google updates the "link:" command stats VERY rarely. So if you wanted to monitor your stats for an article submission case study for example, it would be much more efficient to check the number of backlinks daily at yahoo since google will probably not show them for months in advance.

Has anyone been having any success with GAlerts for the purpose mentioned above?

It will be useful to see the pages that are linking to you once the links are created. I use it to monitor my link building. Very very effective.

It is especially good to monitor newly created pages on the web that are linking back to you.

OK, but just how is it effective? I don't see anything effective if it just reports the results of a "link:domain.com" query since those stats are rarely updated.
