I don't think the overall censhorship carries alot of hypocricy. Google even censors search results in YOUR country. I believe google has a policy of not displaying anything regarding nazism in germany.

"Absent from Google's French and German listings are Web sites that are anti-Semitic, pro-Nazi or related to white supremacy, according to a new report from Harvard University's Berkman Center. Also banned is Jesus-is-lord.com, a fundamentalist Christian site that is adamantly opposed to abortion.

Google confirmed on Wednesday that the sites had been removed from listings available at Google.fr and Google.de. The removed sites continue to appear in listings on the main Google.com site. "

    http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-963132.html

So this is not the first time google has cowtowed to the wishes of a foreign government. It probably won't be the last. Does it bother me? No, not really. Am I going to thrust my chest out and start talking about "the hypocrisy of national policies". Nope. Just stating the facts. As long as I'm not aiming at building a chinese website titled, "Human Rights", this just goes into the

"Oh wow, that's interesting what's going on over there" file.

well, it's not like this prevents everything...

there was a series about the Tianmen tragedy that was circulated for a while. there were a few sites where you could access it and download it, after like a day of it's release that website was banned. but it started getting passed around through family, friends, etc. i only know of this because i watched a tape of it with my fam when i visited

Google should refuse to do business with countries like these, little lone conform for them. Google should be BLOCKING THEM not the other way around.

In case some of you didn't know, China uses mobile death vans to execute prisoners after an unfair trial with little hope of any appeals. They're also executed right after they're trials (or very shortly after) so any hope of proving yourself innocent through appeals is null.

How can anyone defend the horrific Chinese killing machine and human rights violator.

ha ... ya right ... i'd say it's an incredibly efficient way for the chinese dictators to find you. i bet they filter every single packet.

google in china on china's terms ... whatever, i'd rather they block china but "it's business" right? ;) ... it's unfortunate that some have to live under mind control ... that's about it.

it's not the governements job to feed my family ... this is the problem with communism/socialism ... it assumes you can't take care of yourself.

Yoyo, don't forget about how the Chinese government likes to sell the organs of prisoners after they've execute them to western nations.

And then our government gets on their website and says "it doesn't happen", when suddenly an article comes out in the AP and confirms that the Chinese government does sell the organs of executed criminals.

I've seen gruesome photos of a Chinese woman with her head blown off....

F*ck you Google for supporting a government that does that to their citizens. You're a piece of trash that cares about profits first, and human rights later. :(

What you think would happen when China opens up at once and everything now?

    - It would stirr up troubles only - is that what so many people want? - It's a gradual process into freedom - Everybody in China wants to be free, - believe it or not.

I think Google's reasons make perfect sense. I for one am not going to judge or view Google badly for their decision. It will just remain to be seen how they will improve their services to the Chinese public.

We don't live in a perfect world man....

Did the USA care about human rights when we went into Iraq for oil money and when that caused us not to be able to deliver a cup of water to victims of Katrina

Business is business man, not kindness...

What is GM and Ford going to do when China starts importing cars into the USA in 2007

Google has to go after the largest market in the world, you have to choose the middle ground to stay in business in many cases!

People can say what they want to about Google, they are doing what they have to do to compete with Microsoft who has invested Billions in China!

    http://dailynews.muzi.com/news/ll/english/10001288.shtml

BEIJING - Microsoft will integrate its research and development (R&D) facilities into one, the Microsoft China R&D Group, to build its largest overseas R&D base, according to the China Business News.

Microsoft promised that it will increase investment in the R&D group, but refused to disclose actual amount of the money.

Zhang Yaqin, vice-president of Microsoft, said that at present Microsoft injects about US$100 million in R&D in China each year.

Zhang disclosed that the employees of Microsoft's R&D work will increase at a fast speed in the future years from the present 800 to 3,000.

The Microsoft R&D center in China has become one of the biggest overseas operations outside the United States with the soundest equipment, complete coverage of business and the biggest investment.

The integration of the Microsoft R&D facilities includes the Microsoft Asia Research Institute, the Microsoft Asia Engineering Institute, the Microsoft China R&D Center, the Microsoft Internet Technology Development (China), the Microsoft Asia Hardware Technological Center, and other R&D centers of Microsoft in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

The big issue is Bush wanting to get the CIA inside of Google in the United States, not what Google does in China!

Google has tailored their search for the Chinese government. If you guys think it's fine, I can't see any points that Google should not cooperate with the Bush administration. Why can't they get more benefits than a foreign government?

Will Spencer must have got hold of you or something with his propaganda!
