Effective? After millions of impressions... and 6 years now I've found in general text ad click through absolutely stomp image ads. However in certain select niches there are some image ads that although they do not get the high clickthroughs can pay out very well. Your best bet is to test and see what works best for your niche.
yep text ads rule, i think it's because people have figures out that image ads are commision based adverts
In my experience text ads perform better, but you should just test both and see which is better for you.
it depends on ur site design and the content . For some text ads will gen more clicks than image ads but not for all the sites and also placement of ads matters a lot
I prefer text ads because it has a higher cost per click, especially 336x280 large rectangle ads. Although image ads might get a bit more clickthrough, it has a lower cpc.

A lot of publishers have tried both and would say text ads are better. But I think it's better if you mix it up and stay in between. I did some searching and a website said that Google AdSense support has this response for the issue: “While we can’t make any guarantees about the earnings potential of image or text ads, we believe that image ads will prove to be a high-performing option for publishers looking to monetize their pages. One advantage to text ads (and disadvantage) is you can spy on your competition with tools like spyfu and keyword spy. These tools really help. Uncover some gems with keywords and the like!
unless, there is sexy babe in the image ad, no one even looks are them.... text ads get a much better response.
