Hi :) I recently put my own bb up and wanted to add my adsense code. However, when I found the page index_body.tpl, I found it to be one of those unrecognizable Windows pages with their generic icon.....when I try to open it in Dreamweaver, I get the "cant find a valid editor for this extention" message. Obviously no one here has had that problem, Am I stuck? Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Open it in any plain text editor, or use "Open with..." in Windows, tell it what program you want to use for an editor for .tpl files, and check the box where it says "Always use this program to open this type of file".

I prefer to use Crimson Editor for PHP and TPL files - much faster.

No. You would generally edit {template name}/overall_header.tpl or {template name}/overall_footer.tpl for each forum template you are using.

But that wasn't the question - the question was how to get the files to open in a program recognized by Windows so the files can be edited.

    Or go to

    Open With...
    then select dreamweaver ;)

(Dreamweaver recognizes the files, you just don't have it assigned)

    Or try Crimson Editor :p

Editing those files you could be in trouble because all of your forum pages, including the login page, search error pages, succesfull registration page, welcome page, etc. will have Adsense ads. And I think that is against the TOS, since those pages have no enough content.

    You should edit {template name}/viewtopic.tpl, {template name}/viewforum.tpl and {template name}/index.tpl.

this has been discussed by the most advance forum admin, and yes, putting on that file would let the ads spread overall and it's against the TOS, agreed with alephito.

I think if you check you'll find that the AdSense TOS have been updated.

But if you're still worried, there's an easier way to do it.

    1. edit either the header file or the footer file as i said above.

    2. then do as follows:

Or just use the Inline Ad Mod from phpbb so you can control it from your Admin panel without having to edit code each time.

Thanks, I found the thread explaining how to insert the ad codes into the footers of the forum pages. However, I want the ads to appear at the top of the pages too. How do I do that?

And can I use other advertising programs besides adsense with those directions above that were given in this thread?

Does all the above coding works with the free version of phpbb or with the one you buy?

As far as I know, there is no "one you buy". phpBB is open source software (free to use as long as you include the copyright).
