Make a good site, with lots of interesting and original content, regularly updated, swap a few links, submit to a few directories, add AdSense code, sit and wait. Because they are greedy and think they can break the rules.
You must play fare and abide the rules so that you will not be banned. Few cents earned per day is better than none at all.
There are a lot of illegal scams that do not abide Adsense's TOC. Make sure you read the TOC carefully. As mentioned above rich article based sites usually pull in a good revenue
Take a look at your site architecture and try to put the ads at those places, which are most useful for users. Do no try to trick your users. It is veru short term strategy.

Adsense is the best pay per click program out there. But if you do not get into adsense there are a few good alternatives like Kontera and infolinks.

Follow the rules, find your niche and get your money. But you HAVE to follow the rules, because it's more than important with AdSense. There are always some alternatives to AdSense, but they're one of the best.
