If the site: operator is fixed then Google has done a half ass job at fixing it because I still see large number of pages missing. Great job Google. I truely hope Billy Gates goes after Brinn and Page.
I know they are truely working on killing Google but in the mean time we webmasters are screwed because of Google.
Sure not 100% fixed for me. Example 196 vs 19,600 depending on the DC. Allmost all my sites are like that. Bad in google.com but have normal datacenter results.
The Datacenters are still showing 27600 as before for me, the only problem is that it is old indexed pages and not the new ones but google.com is showing 251,000 pages which is interesting since this morning was showing 50.
I'm looking at two different sites of mine and they both show that pattern - lots of old pages, most no longer existing, instead of newer pages that do actually exist. Good work, Google! Competition for the Wayback Machine? Maybe Google has decided they can't beat Microsoft so they're going after Alta Vista again.
Minstrel, Oh wait! I am sure Matt Cutts could post how this is because of your bad linking habits! It CAN NOT be Google! They don't make mistakes, you do! Disclaimer: this post is complete sarcasm and disgust at the google attempts to blame webmasters for their bugs
I'm fluxing between 5xx pages one day and 129K the next ... i've given up on the issue and have decided to move on and deal with it in other ways. Also PR fanatics ... don't expect any PR update for a while ... looong while.
I think I've seen Google do this before when something they tried didn't work out as planned. It's like they put old data back into the system for "googlebot" to work through. Maybe this has something to do with the system changes deleting new content, so the only way to find it again using their linking system might be to go back to when they believe it was working right, put the old pages back in and let "gbot" try and fix the problem using a hopefully fixed set of new commands?
That's as good an explanation as anything else I've seen to date, markhutch. Sort of like "System Restore" in Windows - roll it back to the "last good boot".
Minstrel, I hope that's the case and things get fixed before long. I try and look at this current Google situtation through logical eyes, but it seems like every time I do that I end up with a migraine headache!
I know. As I was saying at another forum this morning, lately every time I see a statement from anyone at Google implying either that the problem is now fixed or that it's all a result of unscrupulous webmasters, I get angry.
I agree, it's a helluva lot more than the "site query operator" coz traffic has dropped big time. And 800,000 pages to 300 over the course of a couple months... that's something different than a minor glitch in JUST that query. There has to be more going on... I wish I could figure out why google hates me now
Does anyone have any samples of sites where their number of indexed pages have maintained their level or increased? I suspect that 95% of sites are experiencing some kind of loss.
thanks expertu i'll take a look. Has that site ever fluxed - lost and then recoverd or has it just not been hit?
Expertu .. that site, for me, is showing ... Current indexed pages at 503 (June 4, 2006) Maximum indexed pages at 33,000 (August 8, 2005) some of the DCs are currently showing 15K pages indexed so I think this site is also affected.
