I'd like to scan my computer for hard disk health to check for bad sectors and things of this nature. Is there any software you can recommend, preferably which is free?
Isn't Miscrosoft Window's inbuilt Disk Check utility enough for you ? It checks quite deeply for errors and also fixes them.. If you want even more extensive check you must download segate tools which load from bootable disk and thus check ( and format if required ) your hard disks .
Which Windows OS does this come with? I installed software called HDD Health which runs as soon as I start the computer.
In all versions I hope. an illustration for windows 7 for example is given here http://www.fanhow.com/knowhow:Run_Check_Disk_in_Windows_7_26235679 and by the way, dont waste your RAM by running that application on startup. disc check is only needed very rarely ( and certainly of no use running it on startup)
Don't waste your money with commercial utilities. Use MemTest to test your ram and the hd MANUFACTURER utility for the hd. Windows scandisk for filesistem problems
