Because people will add links back to your website or blog other places on the web discussion your content. Links from other websites with same content. why? Because visitors of those websites are looking for information and if they don't find what they are looking for on the other website that links to your website they might click your link to try find the information they are seeking at your website/blog. Submitting to Directories why? Because it might increase your traffic but most importantly it gives you a free (or paid) backlink back to your website/blog. Paying for Inbound Links why? Because its a good SEO alternative instead of PPC advertising which gives no SEO at all. Distributing Content why? Because you can make your own content , add a link back to your site, add it to other places on the web, people copy this into their website with your backlink in it and , DING, you got another free backlink. Thanks and yes this tip are very good for noobs. But i want to point out that if someone clicked the link to my blog you will see that i pointed out that forum and blog backlinks isn't good. Some people missunderstod this. It is good but not that good for search engines. They do not count that high for this BUT forum and somewhat blog comment backlinks is very good way to get traffic. So keep posting your backlinks at forums and blogs
#1 wins hands-down every time. Writing good content is much more cost-effective and it helps build authority. #4 in my estimation isn't an alternate method — it's what you should be doing after you've written your great content in #1.
All excellent points. I would add article submissions: you get at least 2 quality in-bound links per article submitted and if you can write and submit at least 2 articles every week that's a minimum of 100 in-bound links in a year. I'd also go for RSS syndication of your content. This gets your site known and gives you more in-bound links.
