    Lets get some terminology straight, as it seems you might have some confusions there.
    WordPress is a web application which is used to build practically any kind of website. Years ago, when it launched,
    it was predominantly used to build blog websites and this is why people associate it with blogs to this day. So, in its
    essence, it doesn't just help you improve your blog - you are building the actual blog using WordPress. If you have
    already used another script to build your website, you cannot just "add" WordPress to it.

    Now that we got that straight, WordPress is indeed one of the best, if not THE best choice for getting your blog up.
    I can go on a pretty long time listing its benefits, however I would try to encompass just the main ones:

    - very user-friendly, low learning curve
    - very intuitive and functional, fully customizable
    - loads and loads of free plugins and themes to make your website look and feel good
    - very SEO friendly
    - large and friendly community that help users through forums, blog, social networks
    - open-source -> FREE

    Those are just to name a few. Should you decide to go for WordPress for building your blog, you can find tons of information in the form of text and video tutorials, guides, articles etc.

    Hope that info helps ;)

    The basics being mentioned here by Rado_ch, first thing you got to do is decide between WordPress.com or WordPress.org

    Bascially, WordPress.com is only for blogs and you can set up an account and start publishing in minutes there. It is hosted and maintained by Automattic - the group behind WordPress. The other one - WordPress.org (used to represent self hosted WordPress package) is where you have more control over your site and can used it for anything you can think of, not just blog.

    You are correct, I didn't even mention WordPress.com as I don't really count it as a viable option. Options for customizations are limited, you don't have any access to your files and is overall a very, very basic example of what you can do with the real WP application ;)
