First of all, you need to understand what customers(users, we) want from search engine. Just analyze that, and if you can made such SE, then you'll have a successes.

Im not saying don't go for it Im just thinking why would you want to start one?

Surely it would be very boring running it. If you have a site where you are interested in the topic then you are often more driven and don't lose interest.

I just wouldn't want you to get deep into something and get completely bored with it!

Good luck anway. PS check my gambling search enigne in my SIG, creating a niche search engine is easy with the software provided, its better than trying to challenge the G!

If it is a niche search engine, you can be successfull. That is the important point..

I dont think you can be successfull as a general search engine. Simply Google, Yahoo and MSN has much much much more money/time to concantrate on that... But.. they dont have time and money to fight in every niche categories. (at least for now.) So before getting too late i reccomend you to develop your own niche search engine. If you know your field and clever enough, you can be successfull at leats i guess for a few years!

And the best point is that there are lots of open-source libraries/tools you can use!

This is what i am doing in my spare time and a small tip to digital point users from me. Feel free to send me greens ;)

    i agree with casperl.

Try to focus building a niche search engine.

    For example..i wish i have

A search engine only for Forums
A search engine only for business blogs
A search engine only for old websites (archive.org)

    etc...

yer but there are small general search engines that i prefer to google yahoo and msn. instead of using all of them i use surch.com which i believe is better. So if a site like that can get people prefering it, it will do well.(im guessing surch.com is a small site)

With powerful competition, you need to focus a lot on quality and marketing.

Glad to see somebody who's not a prophet of doom for a change! I get it all the time, but it just spurs me on more. (mine's in my profile)

I wrote the lot from scratch (crawler, the works), and although I get remarks like "why re-invent the wheel?", it's been the most fascinating and enjoyable trip doing it! The exercise in itself has been so amazing, and I absolutely love working on it!
"Why re-invent the wheel?" Well, why do anything? Why swing a golf club all day long if you know you don't have a hope of whipping Tiger Woods?

So to headless, if you think you'll enjoy the experience of doing it, then don't let anybody stand in the way of your fun! In my experience, it's really been much more fun than getting wasted every night!

And who knows? Maybe you don't have all the great ideas today, but you might just hit on something that could really take off in a big way. If you'd done nothing up to that point, you would just be a dreamer - ideas with no platform to build them on. So if you want to do it, go for it! Maybe it's gonna take a few years for that great idea to come along, but at least when it does, you'll already have a platform of a working search engine, plus all the experience and knowledge gained from a most incredible trip! And the prophets of doom will still be there, criticising away, without showing us how they've managed to do any better. ;)

I agree to this. I am doing the same thing.

Coding search engines give me a better feeling than any of my previous projects. The best thing i like in linux systems when i started to use them is seeing the texts generated automatically and flowing. :)

The search engine is a better experiment. You code something. You see it does its job automatically and at the end returns you (and more importantly to people) sth very valuable. There is sth strange in it. I dont know, maybe feeling of the power of controlling information :)

Not to mention, that everytime you see it giving great results for something you never expected just yet, it spurs you on even more! Okay, so what if it you're logging a lot of (sometimes strange) unsatisfied queries in the beginning. It's all part of the experience, and it really just serves to help guide you in your work on improvements. Can we call coding SE's something of a labour of love? :D
