Good Resources For Public Domain Materials?

I haven't spent much time checking out what was in the public domain but am curious to explore that arena. I have heard of books and what-not being recycled for today's content in a variety of ways. Does anyone have a good list of public domain sites? --- including sites that might contain music that is in the public domain.

Also..are there any useful guides for the legal side of this arena?
