Good methods to develop back links

I was just wondering what methods you all use to develop backlinks to your site? .... non paid methods only!

    - Do you simply search for related sites, then try post comments, ask for a link, or get into their forums?
    - Do you spend time getting to know the sites community before dropping your links in?
    - Do you have a form of viral marketing you use
    - Do you develop tools / widgets to get people interested in your site
    - Are there other ways you use?

What has worked best for you?
I currently stay active in a few related forums, but I don't go onto many as I prefer to stay active on the ones I post on.
I am attempting the others I listed now to see if they work, I have a feeling they might but I do not know to what extend!

Do directories actually help your page rank? I always wondered if google saw them as a kind of link farm?

Apologies I think this is a duplicate thread :'(

Yes directories do help you to gain popularity, its best if its a strong directory like sevenseek or aviva etc.

My personal preferences of link developing:

    1. Article Marketing
    2. Forum Posting
    3. Reciprocal Linking

Though article marketing is my favorite form of free advertising I usually only have time for forum posting these days.

In fact this is an excellent way of building backlinks. Check adlogger as an example. Its website became PR6 in a short time.

Similarly i had created two opensource projects a few years before and stop developing them later. Recently, i checked their homepages. They are PR6. :)

Another example is DP, the main reson of DP's success is its free tools which were published before this forum.

I will try to utilize this methdod more!

Blog Comments have no effect on SEO, as most blogs have a "rel=nofollow" in their tags. However, if you post quality comments they can send in Good traffic.

Don't be to hasty with forum posting, as they don't allow u to sometimes post your link directly in a forum post.Only in the sig is links allowed.Except for when the poster ask for a website, but then everybody post their websites.
