Good keyword research or good imagination?

I have a fair idea of the basic rules for choosing keywords but always give up as I can't think of niches. Not sure whether anyone does keyword research or whether anyone has had the same feeling. Was thinking of purchasing website built in wordpress which is ready to go. Anyone had the same problem?

No, I generally don't have that problem. I pick a 40,000ish UV search per month main keyword, and grab 9 to 15 smaller tailend keywords from that main one and try to get them.

    Wow.
You have to know how to meaningfully combine them??
    That's where I think it's a mental block.

Before performing a keyword research, you need to brainstorm on your main (seed) keywords for your particular niche. I'd recommend you to use Google Suggest and/or Google's WonderWheel for keyword brainstorming. You're very likely to find out a lot of keyword ideas unless your niche is very very narrow.

Using Google Suggest/WonderWheel, list your seed keywords and put them in Google's Keyword Research Tool to find out more related keywords and important data about each keywords.

Thanks. I think I have most of the right tools. However I seem to pick seed keywords that are either impossible to get or obscure with no search volume. I don't know whether this is an art or a science. I think it is just a mental block, as people have told me they are very light on the keyword research and brainstorm ideas that they don't even need to research?

For me I am constantly researching keywords and not getting past step one.

I understand the concept of going after keywords with high search volume and trying to get it through smaller tailwords, related keywords, cousins and lower hanging fruit, but all these other 'rules' go through my mind (don't go for anything which has a PR of greater than 3 with the keyword in the title etc)

I heard that you can pay for keyword research.

I might do that, pay someone to install WPMU and just start, rather than stay stuck at step one.

What is your website about? What are you exactly selling? If you want to keep your website and niche information private in the forum, you can PM me if you want so that I can try to help you pick the right seed keywords for your niche.

    Hi Ashique,

    That's my whole point.

    I don't have a niche.

    I am not selling anything.

I have published in the 'real world' but I am looking for a niche on the net.

Ideally I'd like to set up some sites and maybe do a combination of affiliate and adsense.

I have only ever sold physical goods sporadically on a platform like ebay for extra income and do okay so I don't specialise in anything.

    Sorry I missed your question.
I have a website but I didn't put any thought into it.
I was going to practice law and abandoned it.
So I have just been playing around with it wasting time.

That's great! Many people do the mistake in choosing a niche without doing enough research and hence end up getting little or no traffic.

Not all items that get sold in eBay are searched in Google. Many eBay buyers directly go to eBay to buy some physical goods and so, for those items (if they're not sold outside ebay), it might be difficult for you to get keyword ideas.

However, if you're planning to sell (or promote) information products in your website you should be able to get a decent list of keywords for a good niche.

Now, what is a good niche?

To be precise, a good niche must have a lot of buyers who are passionate about the product/service and there are many people selling in that niche (which actually proves that money can be made). For info product business, the 3 best niches are:
    - Health,
    - Relationship, and
    - Money and Business

If you've got some interest in any of the three big niches (above) you can dig deeper into the niche to find out what to sell or promote.

You may also like to take a quick exercise in choosing the right niche for your online business. Take a look at Lynn Terry's blog post on "How To Choose A Niche": clicknewz.com/2281/how-to-choose-a-niche/

    Hope that helps. :)
