Ok I have an old machine i am making a server for me to practice on for when i purchase a dedicated. But i'm at the point where I need to get a free control panel for it? Anyone have any information I should know?
depending on your future plans of precise server use - you also may consider to run all from the shell. I got my root server with webmin pre-installed and removed all for simple security reasons. All applications - mysql, email, php, nameserver, etc i have on my high traffic server are installed, configured and maintained using shell access - server key controlled - no password access of any kind ... it helps me sleep much better. it all depends on your plans and needs and how much you know about server security to keep ALL access secure and tight. you may ( most likely WILL have daily hackers knocking at your server ) - hence whatever you chose keep server security in mind.
Server security is the most important thing. For practice purpose you might not want to pay for control panel and that's ok. But, if you are planning to get free control panel on your server, I would not suggest it at all. To keep your server hackers safe then you would certainly need to get a good/secure control panel. Paying for control panel shouldn't be a burden for you at all.
I totally agree with sanderson's comments, but as splatcatballa99, you are just practicing you can use webmin to control the server (via console) , you cant host accounts. Try either of these Zpanel VHCS ISP-CP-Omega ISPConfig CubePanel Lite
You can start with web-cp.net, it have 4 flavors ( personal, domain, reseller, and server ) so that you can start even better. All the best
I like cubepanel lite, but the only problem is it doesn't support fedora core7 (which i have installed) and I don't have a dvd burner at the moment.
watch out if you use webmin (free), it's not safe to leave it on. Instead you should only use it when you are installing dns or something...
I think VHCS2 is good one. But why do you use this kind of control panel when you have more then 100x extra options control panel (cPanel) by spending just about $15 USD month ? Regards, Tj
