I'm making a website that covers ALL sports. Basketball, football, baseball, soccer, hockey, etc.. But for the love of me, I cannot come up with a unique name! I'm looking for something original, like BleacherReport or ESPN.. those are names that stick. All of my ideas are taken, so I'd love to hear yours! Thanks!!
BleacherReport and ESPN only stick because you already associate those names with sports. ESPN is just an abbreviation for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. If you had never heard of ESPN, it could relate to sports, crafts, or animals... Those names are branded. Similar to how Google is to Search. With that said...if you are looking for a similar domain name it's quite irrelevant what you choose. If you want something that makes sense to someone who ISN'T familiar with your brand then you're going to have to sacrifice creativity for something more plain and direct like: JohnsStupidSportsBlog.etc.
Thanks for that input, I agree with you. I'd like a creative name like BR.. so I'm all ears to suggestions!
It's kind of hard to just think of a name. Maybe you should visit some drop-catching services like SnapNames.com or NameJet.com and see what is expiring or will be released. Sometimes you will find something "catchy" that you like, then you can submit a bid. Just remember, anything can be branded and has nothing to do with the topic/niche. For example, Pool.com has nothing to do with swimming pools, but in fact, it is another drop-catching site for domain names.
They have to be available! LOL But it sounds like the OP is looking for something "original" or not having to dish out $$$. Most domainers think they have million dollar names that it is a waste of time to even negotiate with them for garbage names that don't make sense
you can also try something fundo like olports.com (all sports) or multisps, or even try to form something with the initials of all the popular sports which are going to feature in your site (like ( BAFTAS for Basketball, Athletics, Football, tennis and so on ). all the best !
Is it going to be a fan site - or a site for the people that actually participate? Makes a difference to the domain you pick bleacherreport sounds like a fan site to me (haven't visited it)
Just an idea: if you plan to make a serious, authority site, think about making a new brand name from scratch. Google for "brandable domain names", look at Namerific or Brandbucket, or try to think out some new memorable name. Also, if it's not necessary to be a .com domain, there is a plenty of possibilities e.g. arenio.net, sportivo.info/net, SportReport.info, LoveSport.info, WeLoveGame.net, etc.
Don't ask about the domain name in public, however if any one will get the good naome he will register it and make premium for you
