I figure you setup once, you maintain constantly.

But I actually found the template easy to adjust - but maybe I just haven't taken it far enough - I'll have to check out yours ;)

You are in luck. We are almost finished with our new KingBloom Directory Script. If you visit the KingBloom Directory at http://www.kingbloom.com you can get a good idea of how it functions on the end user side.

We hope to have the script available by years end starting at $99. I think people will find that it does what no other directory script does or can.

We will have more information on our web site in the coming weeks.

Mia, considering the number of free and much lower cost scripts available, I think you may have priced yourself out of the market at $99. What would justify paying that much for your directory?

This isn't intended as a slam, by the way - I just don't know that very many people are even going to look at yours when there are so many free and $19.99 ones around.

Minstrel, it is a bit more advanced than the "free" scripts out there. Ours does what some of the $500 to $1000 ones do, and more. $99 is one time, includes FREE support via email for life, and free updates for life.

Our script does a bit more than just list web sites. Anyway, I asked a number of current directory owners/script users what they thought would be a fair price. After researching this the last 6 months we found that $99 seemed to be the sweet spot in terms of pricing.

Free scripts are nice, but that is all they are... FREE, and as such lack many crucial features. YGWYPF IMHO.

Our intent was to create a script that was not only SEO friendly, but gave the admin complete and total control while making their life a bit easier when it comes to validating sites and keeping the directory clean. Features such as a bot that crawls daily to insure that sites in the directory at actually active. If they are not, they are disabled (as defined by a set threshold). They are re-validated automatically if they become available again, and can evetually be deleted if they no longer exist.

Aside from that we have several measures in place to reduce spam and crap listings, and a full set of tools in place for generating revenue from your site right from the start.

I guess what I am trying to say is comparing our script to the free ones is like comparing oranges to apples. Our intent was to give the webmaster of the site control, total control to make a clean, well indexed, high PR, good SEO based directory that generates revenue.

Once we are ready to release the script we will list the feature sets, ie., just what it does that makes it so cool. Stay tuned...

KingBloom Directory certainly looks like a good solution. keep me posted as well. What will the requirements be (PHP, SQL, etc)? It sounds like more of a big boy directory. Will you need a dedicated server to run it?

PHP/MySQL, that's about it... No, you can run it on just about anything. It is not very resource intensive. We've got it running on a Dual AMD 2Ghz unit with about 800 web sites on that particular box.

    home2# load average: 0.27, 0.29, 0.29

    What kind of licensing?

E.g for WSNlinks it's $30 per year for up to three sites; $60 for lifetime.

For me that works well, I can put up sites very cheaply, play around with different designs and setups to see what works for me and decide to keep them or not without having to make a big investment.

Thanks Mia for the fast reply. I was wondering about performance because I've had a computer parsing the dmoz data dump for four days now. Currently it has about 1.5 Million links. I expect it to have about 5 by the time it's done (sometime next week), and I will be adding another Million links to it from my own sites. I will be glad to beta test your script for a copy of it :)

What's language is your parser written in? When I parse it takes a long time, but nothing like that long.

Are you parsing an RDF dump or scraping?

Performance is only going to be limited by the machine power/load. We have completely written our own search on the front end and back end that is extremly fast. Currently with the Biz Directory it is painfully slow, and comletely inaccurate for those that actually search the directory.

$99 per, though we will likely have a multi purchase discount. Something like, buy the first at $99, next is $50. Or 10 licenses for $500. I'm not really sure on that yet. Thats for life. Upgrades for life as well.

I did the dmoz data dump parsing to MySQL database using some free script on net, I was able to do it in 1-2 hours.

it took four days for you? What you were using?

(my desktop here is intel 4 CPU 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM - that could be reason)

    dshah,

I would be interested in where you got the script if you still have it handy. I am using a free PHP script that I found on the net which parses the data dump into a MySql DB. The scripts was craping out on me, so I had to tweak it which probably accounts for its speed. Also, I am using a Single processor pentium 4 in windows environment.
I am happy as long as I can get all the links in the DB. Currently 3,476,737 and counting.

My next challenge is to parse the ChefMoz dump which I am writting a windows app to do. Unless, anybody knows of a good script for that one :)

    Mia,

I like the fact that you are taking a more commercial approach for revenue genaration, and If you can create some good search algorithms, I think the script will be worht the $99. Also, let me suggest that you might include switches (or whatever they are called) like googles Site:www.mysite.com, but more like BestPrice:pruductName or Amazon:productName. You get the idea.
