Good book for HTML, CSS?

    Hello all,

I have a gift card for a book store, and I want to purchase a good web design book. I have a thorough understanding of HTML already... it's just that I learned HTML years ago and haven't developed upon it or learned any new skills. I'd really like to understand CSS better, I can go into CSS right now and edit it pretty well... but starting anything from scratch is really that possible with my knowledge right now.

What are some good books? I'll also ask my web production teacher today as well.

    Thanks.

Does the book start off like you are a complete begginner? I'm looking for something that would suit my skill level. Consider myself someone who is very profricient in 1998 HTML :p I know a lot of books, I only get bits and pieces from. Basicly I want something that will teach me CSS... but once I got that down, I want something that will work as a reference guide as well.

I recommend "HTML, XHTML, and CSS, Sixth Edition (Visual Quickstart Guide)" by Elizabeth Castro, can be used as a tutorial or a complete reference.

I don't. Elizabeth Castro's previous edition of the book was far better than the current one.

    I'll second Ian Lloyd's book.

Also, if you're proficient in "1998 HTML" you'll have to un-learn it in order to be able to use CSS properly. Trust me on this. CSS is a very powerful animal, and if you don't learn to respect it right away, you'll be cursing yourself back to using tables and pixel shims for layout.

For a good explaination as to why, go to your local public library and pick up a copy of Designing With Web Standards, 2nd Edition by Jeffrey Zeldman.

In fact, you'll want to check out ANY book on Web design before you purchase it. That way, if you don't like it, all you've lost is your time :).
