Hands down text ads always generate more clicks and higher pay out per click. I have given image ads a second, third, fourth, any many more chances and they never produce well. Next Google will tell us Adsense Video Units are great... oh, wait a minute they gave up on them
I think in general text ads work well - though it can depend on your niche. If you are in a niche that is image based then an image ad will fit in a lot better than if you are in a text heavy niche.
