Good and recommended server monitor software?

    Hi guys,

Currently I am using Watchdog Server Monitor Software, however this program is outdated and somewhat to limited.

Any recommendations anyone can make regarding good and easy server monitor software? The software needs to be installed on 1 computer, but needs to check several servers if they are online, or not.

Anyone here who recommend me some good software?

    Thanks for the answer, but...

...it seems you have to install this on your servers? That's not exactly what I am looking for.

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to answer!

    //edit

Well it seems it is what I am looking for, but it cannot be installed on Windows machines, only Linus. Bit difficult to install when I use Windows XP on my home PC. ;)

Search for "site uptime monitoring services" or dingitsup.com or something like that.

Well that's not a good solution... I am not using some website with over 300 servers. I am looking for a good program. I already did some searching on Google, but nothing really good came up. Some are to advanced or to expensive.

Therefor I was wondering if someone here could refer me to some good software.

It seems I need to install that on every server? Which is not an option.

Are you just looking to be alerted when a server is not available?

If you are then you could have a look at hyperspin.com. I've used them for a while and it works well.

    Take a look at spiceworks

Running on a PC. It discovers Windows, OS X, Linux and Unix but you need to run it from a PC on your network.

It works pretty well. We use it to monitor a couple of locations one of which has over 400 pieces of equipment on the network.

Thanks for the reply. The program looks nice, however our NOC is in Amsterdam and we are not. So this isn't a solution either, the software looks nice though.

The only few things I have found myself, cost about 1000 USD or more! Insane. :(

Ah, that's too bad. Well... are the servers themselves running linux? Do you have shell access to them? Know anything about scripting and cronjobs? Could easily make something to check if the server is up and running every minute or two and send you an email/text message if not. Doesn't have a pretty user interface but it works.

Yeah, well the thing is, we currently use Watchdog, which does the same as you said, but we wanted to see if there is better software out there. Cause Watchdog is rather limited.

Oh well; guess I have to search more... Thanks anyways.

I would say the best are Nagios, Cacti, MRTG, just my 5 cents.
