I personally give very, very little credence to an Alexa rating because it is just so easy to manipulated. And not many people I know even have that toolbar.

Indeed? Please show us how easy it is to manipulate - I certainly have tried based on many people telling me Alexa is "so easy to manipulated."

 

Alexa? Who cares about Alexa rankings, they are bogus! I had a webmaster deny me a link exchange because Alexa gave me low rankings one month. My site got twice as much traffic as his!

Don't need to go into details, but Alexa's database it crap.

 

They're not so much bogus, as heavily biased in favour of certain groups, especially webmasters. Most directories have good Alexa ratings in comparison with their actual traffic, for instance.

Alexa stats are still just a measure of how much your site is being visited by Alexa toolbar users, and they are an odd bunch.

 

Cheating your way through is rather pointless....

I'd say a lot of people still "care" about alexa. I mean, look at Text Link Ads for instance.. their pricing is pretty much based on the PR of your page and the Alexa Ranking, not to mention you'll sell a lot more link spots on your pages if ppl see that you've got a top 100,000 ranking as opposed to a million plus.

We all know alexa is not the best system - but really, what other competitive company provides the kind of data they attempt to portray?

 

Why does every mention of alexa turn into the same debate about whether its useful or not. Its as bad as a page rank discussion.

 

I think it will only put more load on your servers rather then doing something else. Yeah the rank will be good one on alexa. Alexabooster is a good thing to do it. It uses proxies to generate fake hits.

But in end who cares if 1000 hits generates $2. and 100 hits generates $2.
The main thing is $2.

 

Pretty bold statement there, Lots of people still care about alexa because it a tool for selling just like PR. Although it may not be the best system in the world its still a nice indication and also a way for you to see how your website is actually doing.

 

I fully agree - I care and use alexa toolbar since i know about it
i also find the siteinfo.xml useful to my visitors in addition to alexa rank

it is one of many tools helpful to evaluate the value of a site
the more people use alexa toolbar the more acccurate that help-value of alexa becomes

 

The trouble with alexa is that they do not have a toolbar for firefox, opera and some other browsers.

Ive got Alexa for firefox

 

i have alexa for firefox since long as well
from A9
however today surfing A9 site i read that the alexa-A9 toolbar no longer is upported/maintained by A9

hence a new one fully maintained needs to be found
so far however the A9 toolbar still appears to fully work with alexa

 

Update: I did another test, this time i used a friends computer and did the command prompt instructions i mentioned a while back... and how hard it is to believe, it shockingly WORKED.

I got a site with a alexa rank of 6.2million down to the top 500k.

Bingo. Alexa is easier than what people think to cheat... I only spent around 20mins/day using an autoreloader on the browser and kept copying and pasting ipconfig /renew into cmd.

Alexa isnt bad, but alexa isnt good.

Top 500K? Come on - that isn't manipulation. Give me something that pushes you into 50K or better yet - the top 10K.

 

Rob, I don't think anyone's ever disputed the fact that Alexa is "easy" to fake if you're talking about a 10K+ rating. 6.2 million to 500K could be accomplished with a sinle pc and browser with the alexa toolbar.

"Fake" a 10 - 20K rating - that's what people are saying is not possible/easy.
