Depends on the quality of the developer, and how the client situation. If you have 10 local clients walk in per week you can have a high rate. Buy if you are low on local clients and have to find clients online it will be harder to find clients who will pay a decent rate.

Just look around and see what others are paying to their coders and what they are charging to their clients. You will sure loose clients if you charge high and will feel at loss if you charge too less :)

I would base it on them more than the average rate.

For example, you should pay more to a professional company than you do to a freelancer with his own site.

Experience should play a role in the hourly rate too.

(Meaning don't give $25 an hour to 1yr designer with a sketchy .com he uses to promote with.)

Coders are very much in demand at this day and age. Check out freelancing sites to see what people are paying. Sites such as elance and rentacoder are quite popular I think.

As a developer myself I have the feeling (occasionally) that my regular customers experience the temptation to accept lower coding rates from 3rd party coders, then get back to me. For fixes. This scheme isn't ideal for me as I sometimes have to waste more time working on bugs and inaccurate coding that start from scratch. At the end of the day, cusomers are the ones to take risks while choosing a freelancer to hire for a web development job, and there are lots of fake professionals you could stumble upon on any webmaster related forum, unfortunately.

I came to this thread from another one named "you get what you pay for". Well, most of the time things work like that.

I bill my programmers out at 100-125 dollars an hour and pay them 75-100. They are both studs though. They developed our in house CMS.

If it's worth doing, its worth doing right.
