my primary keyphrase has been stuck at # 2 for some time in google uk (all the web) any suggestions on how to move this up to the # 1 spot or is it really just a case of carrying on with what i am doing? many thanks
Well. you need to analyse the website that is on # 1. See its backlinks, its on-site optimization, number of indexed pages and you will see the answer to your question.

I think you should work on it more... apply those SEO strategies.. like here on the forum.. use your targeted keyword and have your link signature here
Analyze #1 site and then apply the SEO techniques which are applied by that website. Try to make your site better than it by using various other better options because Google updates it's index constantly and you can be at #1 position only if you update your site constantly.
To get ranked on top position..make some quality backlinks and also you have to analyze your competitor website and marketing activities...
hi thanks for your comments well the primary key phrase is "skin care products" i rank #1 for "skin care product" and # 2 for "skin care products" the site that is ranking # 1 for "skin care products" is ranking number # 3 for "skin care product" so i have beaten the comcerned site for the singular phrase but not the pluaral thanks
While being #1 is nice, it isn't always the best. The description text that Google shows in the SE listing can also play a role in how effective the listing is. For example, I owned 2 sites that competed in the same market for the same space. In one particular instance, I had site A ranked #2 for a term and site B ranked #3 for the same term. You would think that site A would receive more visitors due to it's higher ranking, but it didn't. Site B received significantly more visitors based on that search term at a number 3 ranking. I suspect that it had to do with the description that Google displayed for site B was more "attractive" to visitors. Personally, I would be happy at #2 and start looking at other keywords within that niche to compete for.
